How Understanding Fundamental Particle Interactions Helps us Understand the Universe
A talk by Dr. Justin Albert (Univ. of Victoria)
The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 by the approximately 7000 members of the worldwide ATLAS and CMS collaborations (including 16 of my colleagues and myself based at U. Victoria) at the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN Laboratory just outside Geneva, Switzerland is one of several discoveries in the past few decades that has had an impact on our understanding of some of the basic aspects of the Universe in which we live. What do we know, at present, about the very early stages of the Universe; and also what can we predict about what will happen to the Universe, and to our own Earth, billions of years from now? And what are some of the many remaining open questions about the formation and evolution of our Universe?
